Civil Litigation involves a situation where two or more persons have a dispute and cannot otherwise settle it without litigating it in the Court system. This can include landlord/tenant matters, property disputes, money owed from one person to another, medical malpractice and personal injuries. You should meet with any attorney to discuss your dispute to see how the law applies to your situation. Normally our hourly rate applies to these types of cases and a retainer will be required up front.
Prior to initiating court proceedings, we usually recommend you seek the services of the Dispute Settlement Center in Carrboro or Hillsborough to mediate your dispute. Mediation is a process where you sit down with a neutral third party who is trained to assist you in resolving your dispute. Most counties will, at some point during your litigation, require you to attend mediation or arbitration before you case can be heard before a Judge. Disputes are very often resolved through mediation.
